Pondicherry is where the French tried to setup their own Indian empire. It didn't really work, though, but the present day town still has a few reminders of those times. Technically, The Union Territory of Pondicherry includes 4 enclaves located in three states of South India . It includes the coastal towns of Pondicherry and Karaikal in Tamil Nadu, Yanam in Andhra Pradesh and Mahe in Kerala.

Present day Pondicherry is mostly interested as the site of the Ashram of Aurobindo. Pondicherry also has a superb beach.

Going beyond the attractive envoirn of Pondicherry , there are many interesting sites for tourists. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, where Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lived for the most parts of their lives; The Pondicherry Museum hub of the most exquisite collections on architecture and sculpture; Pondicherry beach located alongside historical monuments. The other interesting sites include the Bharti and Bharthidasan Memorial museums and the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
