Bus Service for Getting Around Delhi

Filed under:

Private deluxe buses are faster and more comfortable than state buses, usually depart from near the Ramakrishna Mission at the end of Main Bazaar, Paharganj, but some pick up passengers at hotels. Delhi is at the centre of an extensive bus network covering much of north India’s neighbouring states. The vast majority of state-run buses depart from the Inter-state Bus Terminal near Kashmiri Gate in Old Delhi , which has a cafe and left-luggage counter. However, services for some UP hill stations like Nainital, Almora and Ramnagar (for Corbett National Park) leave from Anand Vihar ISBT across the Yamuna towards Ghaziabad. Buses to Agra, Mathura, Bharatpur,Vrindavan, Gwalior, Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar leave from the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT south of Hazrat Nizamuddin. However, for Jaipur and other points in Rajasthan, the Rajasthan Roadways terminal at Bikaner House, India Gate has by far the best service, with a range that includes comfortable deluxe buses.

Popular tourist destinations near Delhi easily accessible by bus are:
Kullu
Manali
Dharamsala
Pushkar
Nainital
Agra
Mathura
Vrindavan
Bharatpur

You can easily book tickets a day or two in advance at the agencies in Paharganj or Connaught Place.

Train Serices from Delhi

There are 4 major Railways stations in Delhi.

New Delhi Railway Station
Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station
Old Delhi Railway Station
Sarai Rohilla Railway Station

New Delhi Station is situated at the eastern end of Paharganj, less than lkm north of Connaught Place. All the trains leave for the major destinations like Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai leaves from there only. Never enter the station premises without a ticket. In case you are not traveling then remeber to purchase a platform ticket before entering the station premises. The station has 12 platforms which are joined by overbridges. Women travelling alone in second class may prefer to ask for a berth in the ladies’ carriage. Ignore roadside advice to book train tickets elsewhere, and don’t try buying one at the reservations building down the road, a confusion of queues and crowds.

All the stations have easy access from major places of delhi. Or the best way to reach the station is to
take an auto rickshaw (3 wheeler). Do remember to bargain before getting on to the auto rickshaw. There “auto waalas” (auto drivers) charge very high when they see foreigner coming towards them. Most southbound trains leave from New Delhi, many stopping also at Old Delhi station, where you can board the train if it’s more convenient. All trains to Rajasthan, except those to Bharatpur, Kota and Sawai Madhopur, begin their journey at Old Delhi or Sarai Rohilla station, which is several kilometres to the west of Old Delhi railway station.

You can get the details of the trains and schedules from the web site of the Indian Railways./
