The south is one major area for metalware in India (dancing Shivas, : known as Nataraj, are a favourite here -check out the quality in the palace art gallery ! at Thanjavur), the Himalayas another, Dokra, j a speciality of West Bengal and Orissa, uses this very same lost-wax technique to produce charming figures, often depicting animals.

There are many artisian in India casting the statues of gods from the traditional times. From generation, these artisian make their living by selling these products to foreigners. The images are produced by the lost- wax process, in which a model is first carved : out of wax, then surrounded in clay, and ; finally fired. The wax melts to leave a terra- I cotta mould. Small pieces can be cast from : a single mould, but larger ones have to be assembled from up to a dozen pieces, the joins concealed by ornate ornamentation. The best-quality images will have carefully ! detailed fingers and eyes, and the metal should not have pits or spots.
